KZN emergency services have worked through the night after yesterday's torrential rains and thunderstorms brought chaos to parts of the province.

Yesterday's adverse weather conditions caused several injuries and destruction of property in Tugela Ferry and Umsinga areas in the Midlands.

Aside from destruction to property, Emergency Medical Service's Robert mcKenzie says they treated 11 patients including children aged three and four.

Another elderly woman is in a critical condition after a roof collapsed and landed on top of her.

"The paramedics initially had difficulty getting into the area because of swollen rivers and the difficult weather conditions. We used 4X4 ambulances and had to wait for the swollen rivers to subside before we were able to access the affected communities," he said.
