Over 5m apply for Education Dept’s youth job openings
Updated | By Xolani Khumalo
Five-and-a-half million applications have been received for the 287 thousand assistant jobs the Basic Education Department wants to fill in schools.

The department opened phase two applications last week Monday as part of an employment initiative.
Successful applicants will work as either teacher assistants or general assistants, beginning 1 November until the end of March.
The deadline for applications was initially last Sunday, but it was extended to midnight this coming Sunday.
Speaking at a briefing on Friday, Minister Angie Motshekga said they've had to secure the application process.
"There have been lots of difficulties where young people collecting application forms, all sorts of scams have been going around and we are only considering people who have been registered, nothing else.
"There are no walk-ins, there is no one collecting, there is no one recruiting. From this 5.5 million we seek to appoint 287 000 unemployed young people between the ages 28 and 35."
