Over 2 000 households without basic sanitation, says Umsunduzi councillor
Updated | By Nothando Mkhize
An Umsunduzi ward councillor says more than two thousand households in the Mkhondeni area are still without basic sanitation facilities like taps and toilets.
Good hygiene and sanitation practices have become key in our fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
Ward 37's Sandra Lyne says not having access to these basic services puts hundreds of people in the Sakha informal settlement at risk.
The DA councillor says one of the challenges, though is that some residents have built homes on private land, making it difficult for the municipality to deliver services.
"There is no money available for housing in Umsunduzi. COVID-19 has worsened the situation as many of the people are unemployed or partially employed.
"Social distancing is virtually impossible as they have to queue for taps, and they have to queue for water."
