Ten thousand and eight people were diagnosed with the virus, in the last 24 hours, bringing the number of cases confirmed by the Health Ministry, to over 883 000.

One hundred and sixty-six more people have died.

Minister Zweli Mkhize's issued an urgent plea to South Africans to be on their guard and do more to reduce the spread of the pandemic.

He says our positivity rate's climbed to 21% - when it should be 10%. Eight provinces, including KwaZulu-Natal, reported significant increases in the daily infection rate.

KZN's seen a jump of more than 1 500 cases in the last 24 hours.

Mkhize warned that as they continue to assess the situation and identify the risks -- they'll also look at whether more containment measures are needed.

He's urging people who plan on going to the beach this week, not to be carefree.
