Over 10 000 arrests made in KZN since COVID-19 lockdown

There have been over 10 000 arrests in KwaZulu-Natal since the lockdown has started.

Premier Sihle Zikalala gave the update while observing a roadblock in Inanda - north of Durban on Monday. 


"The main reasons for the arrests are for driving without valid permits, and that's why there is this number of arrests."


On Sunday, Zikalala said the lockdown would be tightened in eThekwini after declaring it the epicentre of the coronavirus pandemic in KZN.

Among the measures was ramping up of roadblocks in the district.


"From four o'clock this morning in eThekwini we had 30 roadblocks covering all areas that are coming into the CDB and also areas in townships and the suburbs." 


"So far, more than 100 arrests have been made. Where we are, in this area [Inanda] alone, 14 arrests have been made, with one taxi being suspended."
