Outsourcing Must Fall promises peaceful protests at TUT
Updated | By News24
The Outsourcing Must Fall movement has condemned the violence that erupted at the Tshwane University of Technology's Pretoria West campus yesterday.
"The outsourcingmustfall movement would like to condemn the violence against students and workers at TUT today," said spokesperson Vusi Mahlangu.
"We have embarked on peaceful demonstrations at TUT main campus to call for the end of outsourcing on this campus and the immediate employment of all outsourced workers as permanent employees," he said.
Violence erupted earlier in the day when students wearing ANC-aligned SA Student Congress (Sasco) T-shirts attacked protesting workers outside the university campus.
Police fired rubber bullets and stun grenades to quell the situation.
The group in the Sasco T-shirts had emerged from the campus with bricks and bottles, which they began to throw at the workers who were sitting down. One worker was injured and was bleeding heavily.
Mahlangu said they delivered their demands to management and they were prepared to negotiate but nothing was forthcoming.
He said they were prepared to work with anyone who shared their vision.
"We are open to working with all organisations who sincerely wish to end outsourcing at TUT. We hold that the process must be transparent and be led by those who have a mandate by workers to speak on their behalf," he said.
Mahlangu said they would intensify their actions until their demands were met.
