City spokesperson Mdu Ncalane says the assets were given out for use for a period after which the process to return them must now be carried.

"We can assure citizens of the City of uMhlathuze and South Africa that we are a city that complies with all the legislation within the local government. In this case, we have compiled all the prescripts that govern the municipal assets.

“All assets that were given to the councillor of the previous term of office were intent in according to the script. This is not due to any political party putting pressure on us. It was something that was going to happen eventually.”

Meanwhile, uMhlathuze DA councillor Christo Botha says the politicians had plainly disregarded the municipal managers' request for the return of these assets.

“They were supposed to bring the vehicles back on Thursday. So I phoned on Friday morning to enquire whether they have been returned and I was told that it's still outstanding. I asked the municipal manager to please contact the mayor and the deputy and speaker to please return the vehicles immediately.

“With the results, none of those officials were entitled to those privileges anymore. Some of them did not adhere to the letter so we have to then phone and send 12 members out from the security department to collect the vehicles.”
