He says the feedback that was given by the party's secretary general, Gwede Mantashe at Luthuli House in Johannesburg did not explain fully what happened at the three-day NEC meeting.

Matshiqi says the fact that Tourism Minister Derek Hanekom was able to propose a vote of no confidence against the president suggests more people within the ANC want Jacob Zuma out.

"One of things confronting the leadership of the ANC today is to choose between Jacob Zuma and their careers as politicians because you may reach a point going forward where voters can no longer countenance voting for the ANC as long as President Zuma remains the president of South Africa. In other words, even if Jacob Zuma is replaced as the president of the ANC that may not suffice. What may suffice to voters is to see him out of the Union Buildings," he said.

Also addressing journalists in Durban, Wits School of Governance Professor Susan Booysen has described Zuma as a "harmful wrecking ball president."

"We've seen in August that people don't necessarily adopt another political party. They don't think the DA or the EFF are better or more guaranteed to deliver better but the ANC has lost that status of being unambiguously on the side of the people of South Africa," she said.
