Oscar treated unfairly: Prisoner rights group

A prisoners' rights group feels Oscar Pistorius is being treated unfairly by the Justice Department.

This comes after Pistorius' release on correctional supervision was blocked this week.

Pistorius was due to be released from the Kgosi Mampuru Prison in Pretoria yesterday, after serving a sixth of his five-year sentence for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in 2013.

A petition from the Progressive Women’s Movement of South Africa against his release - claiming it would have been insensitive to release the Paralympian during Women's Month saw the parole board's decision being sent for review by Justice Minister Michael Masutha.

The Justice for Prisoners and Detainees Trust says Judge Thokozile Masipa made it clear in her sentencing when and how Pistorius could be eligible for parole.

The Trust's Derick Mdluli says too much focus is being put on the crime he committed.

"We need not focus on how much of a horrific crime he committed but look at what was the pronouncement made by the judge in terms of placing Pistorius on parole," he said.

"If I was his attorney or council I would have went to the high court on urgent application," Mdluli said.
