Organisers all set for Durban July
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
Durban July organiser, Gold Circle says all is on track for the horse racing event this weekend.
It's given this assurance amid threats of disruptions by a trade union representing some employees of another gaming and leisure company - Phumelela.
The Academic and Professional Staff Association is unhappy after Phumelela began a retrenchment process.
In a statement - Phumelela says it's presented a revised offer to the union - while stressing it has no choice but to close down some of its stores as they are not profitable in the current economic climate.
But APSA's union's Boitumelo Senokoane says workers are being exploited.
He says all began in 2017 when Phumelela cut wages by 50%.
"They must look into other divisions - whether they can't get a 10% cut for other staff members who were never affected in 2017. Some of the workers at Phumelela don't have contracts of employment. The accommodation is not up to scratch. The report of the Public Protector reflects some of these issues," Senokoane said.
