Organisations to campaign against albino killings

The Commission for the Promotion and Protection of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities has entered into an agreement with the Albinism Society of South Africa in an effort to end the killings of people living with the condition.

The two organisations will embark on a nationwide campaign to create awareness about the plight of albinos in the country.

A religious leader arrested in connection with the murder of 20-year-old Thandazile Mpunzi two months ago is due to appear in the Manguzi Magistrate's Court in on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast today.

Mpunzi's mutilated body was found in a shallow grave in the area.

Five people, including her boyfriend and a traditional leader have been arrested.

The commission's Thoko Mkhwanazi-Xaluva says killing albinos does not help anyone.

"We need to tell people that body parts do not heal anybody. They're not going to make you lucky. They're not going to make you rich. They're not anything that's going to be useful to you. You need herbs, not body parts," she said.
