Opposition on top cop's alleged suspension notice
Updated | By Khatija Nxedlana
Opposition parties have been reacting to reports that KZN Police Commissioner Mmamonnye Ngobeni has been served with a notice of suspension by national police chief Khomotso Phahlane.
According to the Sunday Tribune, it's pending an inquiry into her fitness to hold office.
It's reported the investigation stems from her alleged corrupt relationship with Durban businessman Thoshan Panday.
DA Shadow Minister of Police Zakhele Mbhele says it's a positive step.
"We've always said as the DA that when senior managers are implicated in misconduct or corruption there should be swift action, they must be suspended immediately and we can expedite the investigation to have findings at least within 30 days," he said.
The IFP's Blessed Gwala says he's relieved something is being done as he had already raised the issue over a year ago.
"Now we appreciate that someone or some people in the national have taken a decision to suspend her pending an investigation, he said.
The Hawks' spokesperson, Hangwani Mulaudzi says they cannot comment on internal matters.
"The matter between an employer and an employee will remain as such. There is no way we are going to comment on matters," he said.
