Opposition parties slam Ramaphosa 'wishlist' during Sona debate

Opposition political parties have pulled no punches in their criticism of the president's State of the Nation Address.

The Freedom Front Plus says the party will only take President Cyril Ramaphosa's economic reforms seriously if he does away with BEE and affirmative action.

Leader Pieter Groenewald was speaking on day one of the Sona debate in Cape Town on Monday.

"If you amend labour legislation to ensure that unions have less power, we will only accept that if you come forward and you say you stopped Black economic power, we must only accept if you say we must stop affirmative action."

The DA's John Steenhuisen announced that the party will table a motion of no confidence against Ramphosa's entire Cabinet.

Meanwhile, EFF leader Julius Malema called for Police Minister Bheki Cele to be fired or redeployed. Malema feels Cele is competing with Police Commissioner Khehla Sitole.

"If anything you should have taken Ndosi to the army and given someone different from the police who will not compete with the commissioner of police, we will never defeat crime in this country," Malema said.

"For as long as there is competition in the police, it's not stopped. And the only way to stop the competition is to remove the minister of police and send him somewhere else so we can fight back."

The IFP's Narend Singh described Ramaphosa's speech as a wishlist and not a blueprint.

"It lists all the things that would be nice to have yet year after year, the commitment made during Sona is delayed, changed or unfulfilled."
