Opposition parties furious at 19% power tariff hike
Updated | By Noxolo Miya
Opposition political parties have reacted with
fury to the new electricity tariff hike.

Cope's Mosiua Lekota has labelled the 19% price increase approved by national energy regulator Nersa as insensitive.
"It is mindboggling how Nersa can approve this 18.65% increase, there is totally no justification for this increase."
Lekota says the country’s economy's already in a fragile state.
"This increase further harm to the already damaged economy, we can expect that more people will lose their jobs, and more businesses will close their doors. Rich and poor will feel the impact of this increase."
The energy regulator also granted Eskom a 12.7% cost increase for next year.

The EFF's Leigh-Ann Mathys says Nersa has failed to protect consumers.
"Nersa, for the past 10 years has already allowed a 750% increase in electricity costs so there is nothing fair to any increase to power costs given the material condition in our country."
