Opposition parties describe budget as ‘missed opportunity’

There's been a mixed response from opposition political parties to the 2022 Budget Speech by the finance minister.
Enoch Godongwana's warned the country that economic recovery's going to be difficult - highlighting the challenges brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic, last year's riots and corruption.
The DA's Deon George says the minister missed an opportunity to address the public sector wage bill.
”If you look at the debt, and the debt spiral, that is what’s driving it. So we are going to pay about R1 trillion in interest payments over the next three years and that is not going to take us anywhere near where we need to be in terms of managing the debt down”
The EFF's Floyd Shivambu says the speech was not inspiring. He lashed out at government on international borrowing matters describing them as a bottomless pit.
“The government of South Africa owes more than R4.3 billion, which is now approaching more than 80% of the total GDP.
“And we are going to spend more than R310 billion paying interest of loans the state has taken from different local and global institutions.”
