oPhongola truck driver to remain behind bars
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
The truck driver behind the oPhongolo crash that left 20 people dead last year has been denied bail by the local magistrate’s court.
Sibusisio Siyaya made an application to be released on Wednesday.
He is facing 20 counts of culpable homicide after the truck he was driving ploughed into a bakkie transporting school children in September.
A Road Traffic Management Corporation report said that he was driving recklessly for over a kilometre before the crash.
Spokesperson for the NPA in KwaZulu-Natal Natasha Kara says Siyaya had ditched his bail application last year before later making a U-turn on the decision.
”In today’s judgment, the court found that the state had proven its case that Siyaya was a flight risk who might abscond should he be granted bail. The court found that it is not in the interest of justice to grant bail to Siyaya, and he was thus refused.”
Siyaya is set to return to court in September.
