Only 2 days worth of blood stock remaining

The blood bank says blood stocks are dwindling.

That is despite a desperate plea for assistance from members of the public. The SANBS says the country has only enough blood for two days. The supply situation in KZN has improved slightly to 48-hours. 


But the service says more donations are needed to ensure that current reserves of the universal "Group O blood" type aren’t depleted by Tuesday morning. Elective surgeries have been put on hold with the focus on cancer patients, trauma cases and women in childbirth. 


The blood service’s Sifiso Khoza says they need donors to come forward.


"Hopefully we see a major difference on Monday because people often feel they do not have time over the week to donate and do so on weekends", he said.


"So with that trend I am hopeful we we will see a positive change", Khoza said.
