The company's Simone Naicker says they're being denied access to the site by people in the area who want jobs and have asked the Transport Department to step in.

She says workers downed tools about six weeks ago because there were numerous incidents where the construction workers' lives were at risk and their equipment was damaged.

Meanwhile, motorist Fred Kingsley says he travels on the incomplete road daily and there's already been a fatal accident due to the work stoppage.

"The last month has just been chaos. Cars have been just going on the pay section. There's a big drop-off on the pay section to the dirt road and they had to cross - it's just been a nightmare.

"The base has to be redone again. It's going to cost more money. It's very frustrating because a little further along the road going through Umbumbulu and that has been closed a couple of times because of protesting as well," he said.
