They had been leaving a restaurant when an unknown gunman opened fire on them.

Since then, police have not made any arrests in the murder case.

In October last year, Police Minister Bheki Cele said vehicles used to commit the crime had been found and confirmed that suspects had been identified.

Cele also confirmed that the gun used to commit the crime had been found and that detectives were close to bringing the case to finality.

National Police spokesperson, Athlende Mathe says there's a dedicated team of specialists, detectives, analysts and technicians working closely with the NPA in KZN.

"We have gathered critical evidence. From what has been communicated. We have made progress, we have positive evidence linking identified suspects, and others are in custody related to other matters. Others are on the run, and the team is hot on their heels.

We are aware of limited communication with the affected families, the investigation is at a very sensitive stage and we have therefore decided to limit all communication related to this matter.  The limited communication was not at all intended to undermine any of the affected families.
