One year later the legacy lives on

It's been an entire year since the Springboks produced the most memorable performance to dismantle England 32-12 in Yokohama to equal the All Blacks with three Rugby World Cup trophies.

In the build up to the World Cup the Springboks were not favourites and were drawn in the same group as New Zealand who they faced in their first game of the competition. That loss to New Zealand would be the first and only loss of the competition for the Bokke.

Namibia, Canada and Italy would provide the preparation for a showdown with hosts Japan in the quarter-final - a game that would define the Springboks' competition.

After physically destroying Japan, arguably their toughest test would arise - a semi-final against Wales. The Welsh had become somewhat of a bogey team for the Springboks and a win for South Africa would almost be a surprise given their recent history.

The Boks retreated to the trenches for the semi-final and both sides slugged it out in a kicking contest for the ages. With just one try each in the contest Handré Pollard's boot would see his side to a tense 19-16 victory.

The final was a repeat of Paris' final twelve years prior as the Springboks faced an upbeat England side who had throttled the World Champion All Blacks in their semi-final.

It was a game that saw the genius of Rassie Erasmus come to the fore with the Springboks showing a game plan that was different to their semi-final approach.

Not only were they willing to be slightly more adventurous, they were even more uncompromising on defence and that's what wilted the Roses of England.

Tries for wings Makazole Mapimpi and Cheslin Kolbe sent the country into ruptures with the Boks running out more than comfortable 32-12 winners.

"One year later looking back on the World Cup final, it was definitely one of the most memorable experiences of my life," Springbok prop Steven Kitshoff said on the anniversary. "The week building up to that final with the excitement, joy and nervousness was a dream come true and one of the highlights of my career.

"To be involved in such a dominant Springbok team that controlled the set pieces and then to win the game was incredible.

"I cannot believe it's been a year since that final!"
