The Hawks say they received a tip-off about the 21-year-old suspect who had been driving along the Kranskop road outside Greytown yesterday with a passenger in the vehicle.

They say he refused to heed the police's order to stop and instead opened fire on officers.

The Hawks' Hangwani Mulaudzi says members of the crime fighting unit as well as those from the Pietermaritzburg K9 Unit returned fire, killing one of the suspects.

"We managed to retrieve two firearms, money, ammunition as well as a police badge. He was wanted for a string of crimes including hijacking, police killings, attempted murder so there are a lot of charges he was facing.

"This is one of those cases that we felt that it was necessary that we bring the perpetrator to book. Unfortunately, he had to die through a bullet but our members were protecting themselves," he said.

The other suspect was wounded in the shootout and is recovering in hospital under police guard.

It comes as six other suspected police killers are due in the Ntuzuma Magistrate's Court north of Durban after they were arrested on Sunday.
