One person has lost their life while 16 others sustained injuries when a taxi and two cars collided on the M4 South, near Merebank, in Durban, last night.
Details leading up to the crash are not known at this stage. The impact of the collision was so severe the taxi came to rest on its side. Rescue Care emergency services were among those who responded to the scene.
The service's Garrith Jamieson says the man had succumbed to his injuries before help could arrive.
"Some of the patients were ejected from the vehicle and were found lying on the busy freeway. A further 16 people had sustained various injuries ranging from minor to serious and were treated and stabilized on scene by Advance Life Support Paramedics before being transported to various Durban hospitals for the further medical care they required," he said.
"One of the cars, a BMW, had become lodged in the centre median lodged on a barrier," Jamieson said.
"The second car was found further up the freeway," he said.
