One killed, 14 hurt in early morning Durban crash

One person has been killed and 14 others hurt in an early morning crash in Durban.

Two taxis and an SUV collided in the vicinity of Julius Nyerere Road (formerly Warwick Avenue) and North Old Dutch Road just after 5am.

Rescue Care paramedics say a man, believed to be in his 40s, sustained major injuries and died at the scene.

"There was nothing paramedics could do to assist and he was declared dead at the scene," said spokesperson Garrith Jamieson.

He says 14 other people sustained various injuries and were stabilised on scene before being taken to various hospitals for further care.

It is still unclear what caused the crash.

Meanwhile, authorities are investigating the cause of a crash on the M4, south of Durban that claimed the life of a woman last night.

Another person was hurt in the collision near Quality Street in Mobeni.

Jamieson says two vehicles collided on the freeway's southbound carriageway at around 8.30pm. One of the vehicles then went through the barriers and came to a rest along Landsdowne Road.

Medics assessed the woman and declared her dead at the scene. The driver sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital for further care.
