It's understood the school transport vehicle crashed into a stationary bakkie that had stopped on the emergency lane to contact authorities over a pedestrian that was killed in a hit-and-run incident.

The overloaded minibus veered onto oncoming traffic and struck a pedestrian before it came to a stop.

Reaction Unit SA's Prem Balram says among those treated was a seven-year-old girl with critical injuries.

"When paramedics and Reaction officers got to the scene they found the pedestrian had demised. He had been knocked down by a bakkie, it stopped on the side of the road and then a taxi that was passing collided with the stationery vehicle.

“There were 44 children that were overloaded in the taxi and several of them had to be transported to a local hospital for injuries sustained at the collision."
