Oncologists assigned to Albert Luthuli, Addington hospitals

The KZN Health Department says the Wits Health Consortium has agreed to send two oncologists to Durban's Addington Hospital - once radiotherapy machines have been commissioned.

Yesterday, MEC Sibongiseni Dhlomo officially welcomed three cancer treatment specialists from the consortium - who will be based at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli Hospital.
Dhlomo says they expect oncology services to commence at the end of April.
"We are working very hard with the national Department of Health to ensure that the machines are speedily attended to in this manner. There's one linear accelerator there that will be replaced by a new machine. The procurement will have to be sent to Switzerland for stamping.
"After that, it will be dispersed to whichever part of the world so we will then get ours. We were given a timeline of that by the end of April this machine will be up and running," he says.

Last year, the department was reported to the SA Human Rights Commission for the oncology crisis in the province. The Commission later found the department violated the rights of oncology patients.
