Schoenmaker won gold in the 200m breast stroke in Tokyo, while earlier bagging a silver medal in the 100m discipline.

“I don’t think so, I haven’t been on my phone,” she said on her arrival at OR Tambo International Airport on Monday.

“I did go off social media just to focus on my competition. I still have a lot of messages to reply so I haven’t been reading any news or anything so I think that is why it hasn’t sunk in.”

Schoenmaker said although she was disappointed at not bagging a gold medal in 100m, it has made her more motivated than ever before.

“It was very disappointing. I wouldn’t be where I am today and the person I am today. It’s something I needed to learn and a lesson that I needed to go.

"It made me more motivated to go for the next one. Not just try and qualify but try and make the finals and perhaps win the gold.”
