WATCH: Okhahlamba council meeting descends into chaos as ANC turns on own mayor

There's been high drama at a council meeting in the Drakensberg region of Okhahlamba.

It was being held to hear a debate on a motion of no confidence against local municipality mayor Vikizithatha Mlotshwa.

But the meeting devolved into a shouting match and in a video clip Mlotshwa was seen wrestling a microphone away from an EFF councillor.

This is after the embattled mayor summoned a magistrate to swear in a new ANC PR councillor.

The ANC in KZN informed two of its councillors on Wednesday that they'd lost their council seats and terminated their membership for supporting the vote of no confidence.

“They connived with the IFP to unseat the staff of the municipality, which include the deputy mayor of the ANC,” the party's spokesperson for the Josiah Gumede Region Bheki Khanyile explains.

“We believe that if they had the burning issues or concerns about the deputy member of the ANC, as the member of the ANC they suppose to report that to the NEC but they did not do that.”

The IFP and the DA want mayor Mlotshwa to be removed from office following allegations of corruption.

The DA's Okhahlamba constituency head Alf Lees says Wednesday’s failed attempt to pass the motion hasn't deterred them.

"The DA will persist with exposing any malfeasance involving the mayor and anyone else in the Okhahlamba Municipality.

"It is alleged that the mayor  attempted to get a payment of R1.4 million made to a service provided for a Human Rights Day event a few weeks ago, which apparently no one in council had heard of let alone being approved through the proper channels.”
