Officials still counting costs of Durban hospital repairs

Ongoing assessments since KZN's brutal storm have revealed that the estimated cost to repair damaged infrastructure - stands at just over R500-million.

eThekwini says this comprises engineering related repairs, disaster management efforts, cleansing and solid waste, electricity and water work.   

The municipality says the report has requested that a local state of disaster be declared within the metro.

The Public Works Department says it's not sure when repairs to some of Durban's hospitals will begin.

Hospitals including St Aidan’s, Prince Mshiyeni and King Edward were flooded. The Health Department says it needs at least R100 million for repairs.

Lesiba Kgwele with Public Works says costs may increase. 

"The national department of health as well as the provincial department are busy detailing the scope and costs of the repairs. There are 18 health facilities affected by the storm. The cost at health facilities was not quantified," he says.
