Officials to assess damage in thunderstorm-hit Escort

Disaster management teams are assessing the damage caused by severe thunderstorms in Escort, Ulundu and Abaqulusi.

Officials say several homes were damaged or destroyed by strong winds and hailstorms this week. A child died and two others were injured after they were struck by lightning in Dannhauser.

Cooperative Governance spokesperson Sboniso Mngadi says other departments have come on board to provide relief to the affected families:
"This will assist us in terms of providing the immediate relief to the families that have lost their valuables. The MEC is also coordinating with other departments such as health home affairs and SASSA to assist speed up the process of replacing the lost documents and SASSA cards."
