A Durban Flying Squad member who was shot and wounded while on duty in KwaMashu has died.
Just over a week ago, Warrant Officer Ashok Ramsakkan and his partner had been pursuing a suspicious looking bakkie on Malandela Road when the occupants opened fire on them with rifles - hitting Ramsakkan in the neck.
The 53-year-old veteran officer was rushed to hospital in a critical condition where he underwent emergency surgery.
The Police spokesperson Jay Naicker says the man has succumbed to his injuries.
"He remained in a critical condition for over a week. We received a message last night that he passed away while still in hospital.
"The Provincial Commissioner has extended her heartfelt condolences to the family at this time. They will remain in our thoughts and prayers," he said.
The suspects managed to get away and no arrests have been made. The Hawks have taken over the investigation.
Ramsakkan's death brings to nearly 80 the number of officers killed the country this year.
