He was arrested on Saturday night after an altercation near a New Year's Eve party hosted by the Sharks.

It was after the game between the Cell C Sharks and Vodacom Bulls.

In a statement, The Sharks say the off-duty police officer who had attended the match as a patron, was being escorted off the premises after he became unruly.

It is alleged that he pulled out his gun and fired a shot, which hit a security officer.

The bullet then ricocheted and struck a patron who was walking past.

The guard and rugby fan, who both suffered leg wounds, were taken to hospital.

"It is alleged they were involved in an altercation with one of the patients and the suspect is alleged to have pulled out a firearm and shot them. A 51-year-old male was arrested for two counts of attempted murder and he has been detained at the Durban central police station," says SAPS spokesperson, Jay Naicker.

Meanwhile, the club says the incident was isolated and has condemned it in the strongest terms.

The Sharks have added that they place great emphasis on providing fans and their families with an environment that is safe.

The club says the incident did not take place in the main stadium complex, where weapon control is strictly monitored by security personnel.
