Among other things, they want president Jacob Zuma to step down.

Occupy Luthuli House organiser Gugu Ndima says despite being insulted by the other ANC faction, they will continue with their fight for change within the party.

"Look - a revolution is not an event, it's a process. This is one of the first steps that we're going to take. We're happy that it's led by young people. It's young people of the African National Congress. So, it's going to continue. As we've said - we're going to demonstrate peacefully and this is the process. So the fact is that its known by society that ANC members are able to change the trajectory of the ANC currently," she said.

Members of the Umkhonto We Sizwe Military Veterans Association clad in military fatigues - arrived at the party headquarters ahead of the protest - saying they were there to defend the ANC.

Their leader is Kebby Maphatsoe says there are other forums to voice any concerns.

"We're all members of the ANC. If you have grievances - you raise them through certain channels and branches. If you're not happy, we go to the region, the province and ultimately you write to the national office to say you're not happy with the following things. That's how we follow things," he said.
