He's on a three-day visit to Alaska to highlight the impact of climate change.

Obama has been speaking at the school gym in Kotzebue, a small Alaskan town of 3000.

"The good news is we've made a lot of progress in the last six years but I'm here to tell you we've got to do more. We've got to move faster - we're not moving fast enough. And for the sake of our kids, we've got to keep going. American has to lead the world into transitioning into a clean energy economy," he said.

The United States is the world's second biggest emitter of gases that play a lead role in global warming, after China.

Last month, the White House unveiled the country's Clean Power Plan, a set of environmental rules and regulations that will hone in on pollution from the nation's power plants. Limits on power-plant carbon emissions will be set for the first time.

The plan states plants will have to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 32% by 2030.
