Nzimande labels brutal murder of Fort Hare student ‘barbaric, shameful’
Updated | By Eva Chipa
Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande has described the brutal murder of 23-year-old Fort Hare university law student, Nosicelo Mtebeni, as a “barbaric act”.
Mtebeni’s dismembered body was found in a suitcase by members of the public on Thursday.
Her 25-year-old boyfriend is expected to appear in court in connection with her murder on Monday.
“I denounce such barbaric and shameful acts committed against women, both in our institutions of learning and in society in general,” Nzimande said.
“Our society cannot continue harbouring such disgraceful people and criminals, who are hell-bent to tear the moral fibre of our society apart."
Meanwhile, the Commission for Gender Equality CGE chairperson Tamara Mathebula says the time has come for the department to institute policies to deal with gender-based violence at institutions of higher learning.
“These grim developments have darkened the meaning of women's month and we view the continued killings of women as an act of confrontation to the law by GBV perpetrators.”
