Numsa members take march to Transnet
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
Contract workers have been protesting at Transnet's terminal in Richards Bay over alleged mistreatment by the state-owned entity.
Trade Union, Numsa's Phakamile Hlubi says over the years, their members have been treated poorly because of their vulnerability as contractors.
Hlubi also claims workers have been offered permanent posts in exchange for sexual favours.
"We're demanding an end to the sex for jobs scandal that has been plaguing this parastatal for years. We're also demanding that contractors that have been working more than three months be employed and be given full-time employment in line with the conditions in the labour legislation," she said.
In a short statement, Transnet says while it does not recognise Numsa as a union at the company - it remains committed to engaging with all stakeholders, including organised labour.
