Less than 100 children are now waiting to be placed in public schools across the province.

The number had been in the thousands last week.

The department says classes are in full swing.

Officials say all schools have been provided with the necessary learning materials.

Spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi says the remaining pupils should be accommodated by the end of this week.

"The district admissions committees have attended to the issue of learners who were outstanding in terms of admission. We have seen a decline in queues and the number of parents visiting our districts. We are attending to the mop up programme and we are of the view that come this Friday, we will have attended to all outstanding cases," he says.
