NSRI warns of dangers of rip currents
Updated | By Sandile Bhengu
The National Sea Rescue Institute has warned tourists and beachgoers of the dangers of rip currents when swimming in the ocean.
The NSRI says rip currents remain the leading cause of drownings on the coast.
The organisation’s Craig Lambinon says holidaymakers should swim at beaches which are protected by lifeguards, and only swim within demarcated areas.
"Everyone should be aware of the daily two high tides and two low tides and be aware of spring tides that happens during the full moon and new moon phases.
“Inland water uses on lakes, rivers and lagoons at swimming pools or at any body of water should approach water recreational activities with safety, top of mind," says Lambinon.
He's urged parents and guardians to keep watch over children at all times.
"Children must be supervised by responsible adults hen they are swimming. NSRI and emergency services are on high alert to respond to emergencies."
