NSPCA to appeal go-ahead for proposed seismic survey
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
The National Council of the SPCA is appealing a proposed 3D seismic survey off southeast South Africa, saying there are real concerns for the welfare of marine animals and environmental impact.

A multinational geoscience technology company plans to explore oil and gas in the coastal area that stretches from Gqeberha to Plettenberg Bay.
CGG Services SAS, whose head office is in France, was granted environmental authorisation last month.
The NSPCA's Jacques Peacock says the proposed speculative survey threatens ecosystems in the area.
He says there's little consideration of the shock waves, sound disturbance and pollution, which could travel beyond the survey area.

"NSPCA has amplified the importance of legal precedent established by our courts, including the Constitutional Court, which emphasises the need for animal welfare to be recognised as a vital aspect of our lives and for consideration in that regard to take the forefront in any decisions which may affect animals.
"This marine ecosystem will be overthrown by industrial activity for economic gain at the expense of the environment and animals. Turtles go deaf, and seals lose track of migratory routes during mating season."
