NSFAS says the 26-year-old Manyanya's funding for the current academic year had not been confirmed at the time of her passing.

It says she was among students whose progression status was being queried with the college.

Meanwhile, Higher Education spokesperson Ishmael Mnisi says colleges must intervene where students are struggling with accommodation.

"We are really not agreeing with a view of where students will be let off to the streets no what the circumstances are - where their safety will be compromised.

"That is not something we are signing for when we sign with our private accommodation owners as far is that is concerned.

"So I think it must be very clear whether the student was a beneficiary or not a beneficiary of NSFAS we remained concerned when our students are on the streets and also this is one of the issues we are discussing with the management."
