NPO raising funds for new Durban Search and Rescue Unit vessel

A Durban North based NPO, established to support the SAPS, is on a mission. The Law Enforcement Foundation is raising funds to buy a new rescue vessel for the city's Search and Rescue Unit.

The foundation is aiming to raise R100,000.

Co-founder, Gill Austin says the unit works across the province and responds to more than 300 calls a year.

"I've never come across a more dedicated unit, they work together like brothers. These are people like you and me, they have got families that are waiting for them at home. They go out at all hours of the day and night to save lives and they are really true heroes," she said.

The unit only has one rescue vessel at the moment and a replacement has to be hired when it is out of service.

A secondhand Gemini 5.5-metre RIB has recently become available and Austin says it is exactly what they are looking for.

"The boat is currently in the possession of the NSRI, so it is equipped to do the services necessary for rescues and dives. It is a vessel that they are able to purchase at a very good price. There are a few alterations they would need to make, but on the whole, the boat is what they need to help with rescues," she said.
