NPA says no decision on Gordhan's possible prosecution
The National Prosecuting Authority has confirmed that it has received a docket from the Hawks relating to the probe into the so-called rogue unit at the South Africa Revenue Service.
It follows a report in the Sunday Times today that the Hawks allegedly want Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan prosecuted for espionage and that the NPA is now considering the matter.
Gordhan was commissioner of the Revenue Service when the unit, accused of illegal intelligence gathering and spying on taxpayers, was set up.
NPA spokesperson, Luvuyo Mfaku insists no decision relating to prosecution has been made.
"It is still under investigation. The NPA has been approached and as we do with all the cases, a prosecutor will get involved to guide the investigations. There is no decision whatsoever to prosecute any person. We do not know [of] any prosecution of the Minister of Finance," he said.
The Sunday Times is quoting ANC sources as saying Gordhan's arrest would see Eskom CEO Brian Molefe becoming the country's next treasury boss in a cabinet reshuffle, with Gordhan's deputy, Mcebisi Jonas also replaced.
