'Not much was done' on state capture recommendations - analyst

Cabinet is set to receive a progress report soon on the progress of implementing the State Capture Commission on Inquiry recommendations.

A year ago, commission chair Justice Raymond Zondo handed over the report's final volumes to President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Four months later, Ramaphosa submitted to Parliament the government's plan for implementing the recommendations.

 

Political analyst Ralph Mathekga says the government's response to the inquiry has been underwhelming.

 

"The big question is whether we have gone further in terms of corrections, prosecuting those that are perpetrators and being able to even correct some of the state institutions that have been vulnerable under state capture.

"Not very much was done, one wanted to get a sense of urgency, but we have not seen that and looking at the political alignment and the pulse of government as to what could be the priority of government at this point in time."
