Nongoma mayor blames substance abuse for string of murders
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
Nongoma mayor Albert Mncwango says they are working on coming up with lasting interventions following a string of recent murders in the northern KwaZulu-Natal town.
At the beginning of this month, 25-year-old University student, Thandeka Mbatha, was found dead by a passer-by in Dayeni.
It's understood she was strangled to death.
Another young woman was also recently found murdered, allegedly by her taxi driver boyfriend.
Days later, the body of a 38-year-old woman was found in Ekubuseni with 17 stab wounds.
Mayor Mncwango visited some of the affected families and communities on Thursday.
He said it appears most of the victims knew the perpetrators.
Mncwango also believes substance abuse played a role in some of the crimes.
"A lot of drugs are actually changing hands in our community and they land in the hands of our young people.
"Because in many cases, you find that the conflicts and disputes that always lead to violence emanate from alcohol.
"So the alcohol intake is very high. I wish that as a community, we could stand up and do something about alcohol abuse."
