No salary increases for senior state officials

The Independent Commission for the Remuneration of Public Office Bearers has recommended that there be no salary increase for Senior Public Office Bearers in the current financial year.

The Commission says it took the decision after considering a range of factors - including budgetary constraints, inflation and the state of the country’s economy. 


The Commission’s Deputy Chair Matshego Ramagaga says they consulted Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan.


"The minister of Finance expressed serious concerns regarding the current state of the South African economy. The increasing constraints on the fiscus, the inflationary increases and the available resources of the state. Further, the minister highlighted the significant impact of previous public service wage agreements on the economy," she said. 


She says they also met with the Chief Justice.


"The Chief Justice expressed his concerns regarding the state of the South African economy. The Chief Justice further indicated that given the stat of the economy - the judges views were that they would sacrifice an increase in their remuneration," she said.  


The Commission's recommendations include - 


The recommendations include no adjustments for:


-       All members of the National Executive and deputy ministers (including president and deputy president)


-       All members of parliament


-       All members of the provincial executive and legislatures


-       All judges


-       Local government: mayor - chief whip


-       Traditional Kings/ Queens and full-time deputy chairperson of Provincial House of Traditional Leaders


A four percent cost-of-living adjustment has however been recommended for municipal councillors. Meanwhile magistrates and certain full-time members of the National House of Traditional Leaders can expect a six percent salary increase.
