No Marikana justice yet: activists

As the country today marks 3 years since the deaths of 34 miners in Marikana, human rights activists say there is still no justice for those killed and their families.

The Right to Know Campaign says President Jacob Zuma's Farlam Commission report stopped short of determining political responsibility for the killings.

The report, released earlier this year, found that the actions by police could have been prevented and it further questioned the fitness of National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega to hold office.

The campaign's Phezu Ntetha says they are calling for the immediate suspension and prosecution of all the police officers implicated, including Phiyega.

" SAPS could have done better to handle the situation and at the very least, this is not what one would expect from a democratic establishment. We have to be part of a society that speaks out to ensure that something like this never again happens in a democratic society with a constitution as good as ours.

"The Marikana community, especially the widows, deserve better. We are not convinced that the commission has done enough. Some of those families have lost breadwinners. Now we have created orphans and all sorts of abnormalities for our society", Netha said.

The commission investigated the deaths of 34 striking miners on August 16 when police opened fire, as well as those of 10 others who were killed days before.
