No jab, no stadium entry - Mthethwa takes hard line with sports fans
Updated | By Sibahle Motha
Sports Minister Nathi Mthethwa has warned fans they will not be allowed entry into stadiums if they are not vaccinated against Covid-19.
“Absolutely, that is the incentive actually to go back to play, vaccinate.”
On Wednesday, Mthethwa launched the ‘Return to Play - its in your hands’ campaign at the FNB stadium in Soweto.
The campaign is set to mobilise all those in the sports and arts industries to vaccinate against the coronavirus.
This will ensure that activities in those sectors can be reopened.
Mthethwa said all supporters, sports stars and people in the arts should get involved.
“It’s in your hands. Back to play is in your hands. It will depend as we have been driving through the message here. It will depend on how many people have been vaccinated.
"So herd immunity is important, we are here to drive a point particularly to artists and athletes that it is in their hands that the time frame is what their hands give all of us.”
The country is aiming at vaccinating at least 40 million people by the end of December in order to achieve population immunity.
Thus far, only six million South Africans are fully vaccinated against the deadly virus.
