No end in sight for Nehawu strike at SARS
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
Trade union Nehawu says the industrial action at the South African Revenue Service will continue while it awaits feedback on a wage offer by SARS from striking workers.
The union downed tools last week, demanding a 12% wage increase.
SARS initially said it cannot afford to pay the workers any increases, but has since upped its wage offer to 1.3%.
Nehawu spokesperson Lwazi Nkolozi says wages are not the only sticking point.
"We are proceeding with the national strike. Monday and Tuesday, we will be getting our mandates from our members at the picket lines about the new offer that SARS tabled.
"We are going to forge ahead until we get a mandate from our members on what to do.
"We demand full medical aid and housing allowance to all employees and a token of appreciation for employees of R2000 for their sterling job."
In a statement released by SARS on Wednesday, the revenue service said Nehawu’s wage demands remain unaffordable.
