The South African Federation of Trade Union (Saftu) is refusing to comment on a leaked letter informing general-secretary Zwelinzima Vavi of his suspension.

The letter, which has been widely shared on social media, asks Vavi to provide reasons as to why he should not be placed on precautionary suspension.

The federation is accusing the veteran unionist of "transgressions that are tantamount to acts of acts of misconduct and misbehaviour and warrants investigations and possible disciplinary action".

"This, therefore, serves to inform you that you are requested to give reasons why you shouldn't be placed under a precautionary suspension whilst the investigations take place.

"These investigations will, amongst others, be about the alleged violations of the constitution, breach of administration and finance policy and disrespecting/undermining constitutional structural decisions and resolution," President Mac Chavalala said in the letter.

Vavi has been given until Thursday to respond to the allegations.

This will not be the first time that Vavi has landed in hot waters over issues of misconduct.

In 2013, he was accused of sexual misconduct by his employer and in 2015 was expelled from Cosatu.
