No change to minimum maths pass mark - Basic Education
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
The Department of Basic Education says information circulating on social media claiming the pass mark for mathematics has been reduced to 20% is false.
The department's spokesperson, Elijah Mahlangu says there is no change to the minimum pass rate for learners from Grades 7 to 12.
In 2016, Minister Angie Motshekga made a special concession for Grades 7 to 9 learners, who had passed all the requisite subjects, except for mathematics - to be promoted to the next grade.

That move was part of a transitional arrangement following the implementation of Curriculum Assessment Policy Statements (CAPS) in senior phase schools.
Mahlangu says the spreading of fake or old news is misleading and irresponsible.
"That matter was addressed and clarified in 2016 and 2017. But seeing now that it has resurfaced and people are sharing it as though the department has issued a new policy changing the pass mark. We have not done that."
"It is important that people verify with us before discussing this matter and misleading each other in the process," he said.
