No backing down for workers in petrol strike: CEPPAWAU to meet with CCMA

As the national petrol strike continues into its third week, chemicals sector union CEPPWAWU has now approached the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) for assistance following another round of failed negotiations with the National Petroleum Employer's Association (NPEA).

In July, refinery and depot workers downed tools after wage negotiations between the employer and the union collapsed.

Workers have rejected the 7% wage increase offered by the NPEA, and are demanding a 9% pay hike for 2016.

Deputy Chairperson of the NPEA Zimisele Majamane said on Friday negotiations with the union were fruitless.

"Subsequent to that we have received an invitation from the CCMA to meet.

"They have not indicated when the parties should meet, this is in terms of the labour relations act.

"At this stage we are looking [forward to] that invitation by the CCMA and we will probably meet with the unions at the CCMA," he said.

The strike has affected deliveries from oil refineries and fuel depots, nationally.
